What is the VSP?

VSP stands for Vlaams Software Platform, which translates to Flemish Software Platform. The VSP was founded in spring of 1999, with the mission to be a cluster comprising the industry, universities and research centres dealing with innovative aspects of software engineering for the Flemish ICT industry. The goals and actions of the VSP aim at innovation in software engineering, not coupled to specific application fields and hence useful for the broad Flemish ICT industry.

The VSP is a member organization consisting of both research and industry. Since 2002 the VSP is supported by the Flemish government by means of the IWT, as an acknowledged innovative Flemish cooperation initiative.

In order to strengthen the skills of the Flemish software engineering companies, the VSP defined the following major actions: workgroups, services & products, and networking. Typical activities consist among others of information exchange by means of workgroups, the Extranet, events (lectures + networking), and short courses. These activities should eventually initiate diverse research projects.

Why does the VSP exist?

In the last few decades, the information and communication technology (ICT) seriously impacted both our society and industry. The general expectation is that the ICT development will steadily accelerate over the next decade. Software and software engineering - the technology for developing software - play thereby a vital role.

Flanders has already a strongly developed ICT sector. However it now matters to ensure that in the mid-term our companies will have access to world class software technology. This represents a serious challenge. The only way for the ICT industry to maintain its competitiveness is by improving its productivity and quality. Flanders has a potential to develop an important position in this structurally growing sector, but this is only possible if it avoids lagging behind innovative software engineering.
